Darüşşafaka Kartal Special Care Center
Health
2024
The Darüşşafaka Uğur-Şehriban Mercankaya Special Care Center, to be built in the Kartal district of Istanbul, will provide high-level care services not only to Darüşşafaka donors but also to elderly individuals whose lives are confined to bed. It will also contribute to providing students of the Darüşşafaka Educational Institutions, which have been creating equal opportunities in education since 1863, with a high-quality and contemporary education. The project's design was approached with functional, modern, environmentally friendly, and innovative architectural solutions. Emphasis was placed on maintaining this character throughout the mass, facade, landscape, and interior designs.
The facade shell supports a green building concept with rhythmic planters and vertical climbing plant lines placed within a grid system accessible from common areas. Thanks to the walkable platforms in the grid system on the facade, the care of the plants on each floor can be easily monitored. With this design decision, members will be able to perceive a street from their windows, seeing both greenery and people passing by, even when on the upper floors, and will be able to connect with the outside world from their rooms.
Orientation was identified as the most important factor in the building's placement on the site. The control point located in the center of the building is strategically positioned to oversee member circulation, staff circulation, and social areas. The placement of member rooms on the east, west, and south facades, and the necessity of controlling all rooms from a single point on each floor, were primary factors in shaping the building's form.
The project considered user diversity, employing flexible design solutions to meet individual needs and desires. Accessible and comfortable interior spaces were created for elderly users, incorporating different room types: standard, twin, and suite. The total number of beds within the care center is flexible, depending on the use of the rooms.
The landscape designs were carefully chosen to be guiding, original, and consistent with the building's overall integrity. The curvilinear lines used in the interior of the special care center were also preferred in the garden landscaping, with different floor coverings used for different functions. Large areas of land were allocated to allow for the planting of large trees. The optimal boundaries between the ground floor and basement, which also influenced the landscape design, were considered crucial. The aim was to create a functional landscape design that encourages social interaction, with bamboo gardens, wooden seating areas, and pergolas.
