Altunizade Dormitory Project

Education

2026

Care is taken to ensure that the structures are suitable for repurposing according to changing needs over time. Starting with the goal of designing sustainable buildings, function, form, and interaction with the environment are considered. In the Altunizade Dormitory project, which possesses the characteristic of a sustainable building through the organization of units and the effective use of space, separate pedestrian and parking entrances have been defined for both blocks. This makes it possible for different users to use these two buildings without affecting each other in the event of a functional change over time. The commercial axis between the blocks is envisioned to function as a vibrant street.

On the street facade, a fragmented structure was preferred to harmonize with the scale of Üsküdar buildings and the identity of the region.

Block B, facing a sloping road, is perceived as three separate buildings of different heights when viewed from the street.

This design decision, taken to move away from the massive and multi-story effect of the building form, was achieved through the height difference between the parts, the mass movement created by the tiered structure, and the use of three different facade materials. In both blocks of the project, the ground floors are allocated to common areas such as a cafeteria, infirmary, and study rooms. In Block A, two linear arms containing the rooms converge in a hall to form the main circulation. A courtyard for private use is defined on the inward-facing side of each arm. In both blocks, care has been taken to place 1, 2, and 3-person rooms of the same type side-by-side. Rooms suitable for users with physical disabilities have been included and placed in areas close to the elevators. Accessibility has been a priority throughout the entire building.
