Gökçeada Housing Project
Housing
2019
In project areas that stand out with their local architectural features, the concept of respecting the characteristics of the region is paramount. The housing project designed in Gökçeada, a part of Çanakkale, shares similar concerns due to its location. The project is a residential complex composed of units of varying sizes and features to accommodate different lifestyles. Respect for the region's local architectural language was a primary guiding principle in the design phase, and a design combining local architectural elements with modern touches was adopted. In this context, stone streets, large open spaces, tiered and interactive units, and the use of local materials were preferred.
Village houses are found in many parts of the island, many in ruins or foundation state, and these houses constitute the spatial identity of the island. Therefore, preserving and re-evaluating this architectural heritage has been an important element of the project. In this way, it not only offers users a modern living space but also contributes to the character of the region by preserving the historical and cultural fabric of the island.
The two-story structures called "dams" play an important role in the cultural and social lives of the people living on the island. Therefore, special emphasis has been placed on the use of terraces on the block roofs in the designed complex. All these decisions allowed for the creation of an innovative architectural language that blends the characteristic spirit of the region with traditional design. This ensures a unique and enjoyable living space for users, providing a balance between traditional and contemporary lifestyles.
